Emanuele Alves

Dr. Emanuele Alves is currently a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of South Wales and principal investigator of the Experimental Toxicology Research Laboratory (ETRL). Prior to that, she was Assistant Professor in Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University and Appalachian State University, and held positions at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil's National Board of Judicial Experts, and various universities in Brazil, Portugal, and Cape Verde. She holds a Ph.D. in Forensic Sciences from Porto University, Portugal, an M.Sc. in Chemistry from UFRJ, Brazil, a Postgraduate degree in Crime Scene Investigation from UCB, Brazil, a Degree in Pharmacy from UFF, Brazil, and a Technical degree in Biotechnology from the Federal Technical School of Chemistry, Brazil. Dr. Alves' research focuses on New Psychoactive Substances (NPSs) and homemade drugs, specifically the development and investigation of new pharmacologically active substances, alternative extraction and analytical methodologies for NPSs in "real-world" samples and biological tissues, natural poisons, mechanistic study of intoxications and antidote development, metabolomics, pharmacokinetics, and drug-drug interactions. Beyond her research publications, Dr. Alves has contributed to the scientific community through peer reviewing for various journals, serving on scientific society committees, and evaluating grant proposals including for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
