Ignazio Restivo, PhD

Dr. Ignazio Restivo is a biochemist whose research explores the cellular and molecular effects of dietary phytochemicals on inflammation, redox balance, and programmed cell death, with a focus on disease models such as metabolic syndrome, neurodegeneration, and colorectal cancer. Currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Palermo, he leads investigations on the bioactive compounds of Opuntia ficus indica and their potential in preventing intestinal neoplastic transformation. He has also contributed to comparative studies on the cytotoxicity of tobacco-derived products and to research on insulin-related neurodegeneration. Dr. Restivo earned his PhD in Molecular and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Palermo, including a research stay at the University of Valencia. His doctoral work revealed a novel eryptotic pathway in red blood cells exposed to cigarette smoke, implicating p38 MAPK and Fas signaling—a pathway with potential relevance to vascular complications in smokers. This interest has evolved into a broader exploration of anti-eryptotic and anti-inflammatory properties of phytochemicals, including indicaxanthin and plant sterols, in models of oxidative stress and chronic disease. Dr. Restivo serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Food Biochemistry, Review Editor for Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology and Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences, and participates in the Early Career Reviewer program of Journal of Biological Chemistry.
