Jiabin Shein, PhD

Dr. Jiabin Shen is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of Center for Autism Research and Education (CARE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Dr. Shen is an expert in pediatric injury prevention, cognitive rehabilitation, and applied developmental psychology. His research focuses on the intersection of technology and child health, with a particular interest in children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Dr. Shen earned his Ph.D. in Life-Span Developmental Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and has since developed a strong program of research applying virtual reality and data science to public health challenges. His work has been featured in leading journals including Journal of Pediatric Psychology, Health Psychology, The Lancet Public Health, JAMA Network Open, Clinical Psychology Review, and Child Development. Dr. Shen has received national recognition and competitive funding for projects that span cognitive rehabilitation for children with TBI, health service disparities among children with autism, and the development of virtual and augmented reality tools to reduce implicit bias in healthcare. His research also addresses long-term outcome disparities in brain injury recovery, patient-centered intervention design, and injury prevention through community-based and family-oriented strategies. He has led or co-led interdisciplinary collaborations across psychology, rehabilitation, public health, and computer science to translate complex data into meaningful clinical applications. A committed mentor and scientific leader, Dr. Shen serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Pediatric Psychology and Frontiers in Public Health, and is a Consulting Editor for Rehabilitation Psychology. He is an active reviewer for several high-quality academic journals and grants. He holds leadership positions within the American Psychological Association and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and continues to champion innovation and equity in pediatric health research and training.
